The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has announced the commencement of a competition in honor of President George Weah.
The tournament named and styled “President Cup” will commence today at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS), with exciting football matches.
Speaking at a Press Conference held Tuesday, October, 22 at the LFA head office, Vice President for Operation of the LFA, Wilmot Smith, told Journalists that the competition is named as the “Maiden Edition of the George Manneh Weah President Club”.
According to VPO Smith, the competition is in fulfillment and recognition of the torch bearer of Liberia’s Golden football generation and the chief patron of sports, President Weah.
He mentioned that participating club teams of sixteen in the male category and four in the female category will begin a parade by 8:00 am from Broad Street through Lynch Street to the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS).
He revealed that the importance of the competition is to bestow honor upon President Weah as the Honorary President of the Liberia Football Association.
He added that the retired number 14 Jersey will be presented to the president during the ceremony.
Also speaking, LFA boss, Mustapha Raji, stated that the honor bestowing on the George Weah is their own way of appreciating the chief patron of sports for his immense contribution towards sports in the country.
They further explained that this competition and all other preceding competitions will be named in the form and manner as stated above.
