The Inspector General of Police, Gregory Coleman, has addressed recent reports of an arson attack at the Capitol building, identifying seven lawmakers as persons of interest.
Amid allegations from the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) that the investigation is politically motivated, Coleman firmly denied any bias.
“This investigation has zero political interference,” Coleman stated. “Those involved acted independently, and there’s no evidence linking this to any political party.”
He stressed that the process was based on evidence and urged all parties to cooperate. “If you’re called by the police, it’s part of the process. No one has been charged yet, but evidence will guide us,” he added.
The CDC Chairman had previously announced plans to resist police invitations extended to coalition members, labeling the investigation as an attack on the party.
However, Coleman reiterated the apolitical nature of the probe and called for respect for the rule of law.
“The CDC was accredited through the democratic process and respects the courts. I believe their members will cooperate,” Coleman said.
He clarified that those called to answer questions were doing so as individuals, not as representatives of their party.
Addressing broader concerns, Coleman dismissed a critical human rights report as part of a disinformation campaign but reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding citizens’ rights.
“We respect people’s rights and are committed to accountability. Any officer found violating rights will be investigated and held accountable,” Coleman stated.
He also announced reforms within the police force, including the deployment of body cameras for traffic patrols to improve transparency and accountability.
Apologizing for past misconduct by officers, he added, “We take full responsibility and are committed to transparency.”
Coleman also highlighted a joint security effort in preparation for an upcoming high-profile event.
He assured the public that comprehensive measures had been put in place to ensure safety and order.
“We’ve made all necessary arrangements to accommodate the guests, get them in safely, and ensure the program goes without incident,” Coleman said.
Measures include traffic diversions, admission protocols, and public announcements. “We’ve done a great job so far, and we’re confident the program will proceed smoothly,” he added.
In closing, Coleman called for calm and cooperation from all stakeholders. “The Capitol belongs to the people, and those called to answer must do so. Protests will not change that,” he said.
The investigation into the arson attack remains ongoing, with the police promising a fair and transparent process while ensuring the safety of all involved in the upcoming event.
