The political leader of the opposition Peoples Liberation Party (PLP) has agreed to sign a Waiver of Extradition to return to the State of New Jersey in the U.S. to face several charges against him.
In continuation of its investigation into the arrest and detention of Dr. Daniel Estrada Cassell, documents obtained Monday from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request served on the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office by African Star, he was arrested at Atlanta Airport in Georgia about 9 PM on March 17, 2022.
The arresting officer in his Affidavit to the Magistrate Court of Clayton County in Georgia stated, “…offender did enter and remain in the state of GA knowing he was wanted by Division of Criminal Justice, NJ for Fraud Warrant # DCJ21-16 a felony they will extradite.”
According to the African Star, a Judge at the Clayton County Magistrate Court had earlier issued an order for Cassell’s arrest after the filing of the Warrantless Arrest Probable Cause Affidavit by a law enforcement officer.
After Cassell’s arrest on a Fugitive Warrant and his agreement to return to New Jersey, a law enforcement officer confirmed the extradition verification obtained from the State of New Jersey, prepared the Waiver of Extradition and submitted it to the Clerk at Wright Jail Division for further processing.
The PLP leader has not challenged his arrest and detention and is willing to avoid court proceedings in Georgia to clear the way for his extradition to New Jersey.
The Liberian political figure, Dr. Cassell, who is a trained psychologist and Founder -President and Chief Executive Officer of Kwenyan and Associates Professional Health Services LLC in New Jersey, is facing a four-count felony.
According to the correspondents in Atlanta and Trenton, it is unclear if Dr. Cassell is represented by counsel and no plea has been made in the case.
Following his extradition to NJ, he is expected to make a court appearance when he will be formally apprised of the charges at which he can then enter a plea though defendant Cassell is deemed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Back in Liberia, Our Correspondent says the arrest and detention of Dr. Cassell came as a shock to many who had welcome him to the political fray and had been following his activities in the lead up to Presidential and General Elections in 2023.
PLP was caught unaware by his legal troubles but have urged partisans to remain calm as they try to ascertain facts surrounding the arrest and detention of their political leader and the future of the party.
