By S. Siapha Mulbah

After four rounds of league fixtures in the 2023/2024 league season, Paynesville Football Club on Thursday September 28, 2023, won their first league match since they won promotion to the Orange First Division league at the end of the last football season.

The debutants of the Liberian top flight handed the league leaders Heaven Eleven their first defeat of the season, in a four goal thriller at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex Practice Pitch.

Yusuf Kargbo in the 23rd minute scored the first goal of the match for Heaven Eleven, with a hope to win the first half against their Paynesville neighbors, but Mark Paye’s world-class finish equalizer on 41 minutes ensured that the scores were level at half time.

Just after the restart, Mark Paye grabbed his second goal in 47th minute, giving his side the lead against the league table toppers in the much-anticipated Paynesville derby.

Lawrence Kumeh scored his first league goal for Paynesville FC to give Coach Dominic Savice his first league win. It ended 3-1 in the favor of Paynesville Football Club, their first ever first division victory.

In other round four fixtures, Bea Mountain and Watanga Football Clubs settled for a goalless draw at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia. The result pushed Watanga to a third place position on the national league table, to sit directly under LISCR, who are second to Heaven Eleven.

Bea Mountain, who ended the last edition of the competition undefeated, yet losing the title to LISCR, have tasted defeat in the current season. The ‘Gold Boys’ who are fondly called “the pride of Grand Cape Mount” in Liberia football quarters, have played four games in the ongoing season. They have won one, drawn two, and lost one in their four fixtures.
