The United Nations Office High Commission for Human Rights and partners will begin a three-day training of trainers (ToT) for law enforcement officers in Monrovia on July 31, 2023.
The training is part of its advocacy, policy, technical support and capacity building to integrate human rights in the context of law enforcement.
According to the OHCHR, the training will minimize the high risk of human rights violation and abuse in the October 10 presidential and general elections.
“In the electoral context, it is required that security forces strive to ensure that all citizens benefit from elections that are administratively sound and free from disruptive forces that seek to undermine the expression of popular will,” the UN Human Rights Office said.
“Therefore, the OHCHR, UNDP, and partners intend to provide elections management training for the LNP and other joint security officers on effective elections security management, to enhance their capacity to prevent, manage and respond to potential security threats,” the OHCHR added.
The OHCHR added that to ensure strategic intent and achievement of the desired effect on preventing potential violation, the training will be held in various modes comprising of a ToT for preexisting trainers who will be responsible to cascade the training in the six police regions across the country.
“The training will target county and zone commanders of the joint security; and a crowd controlling training, targeting the FPU of the Liberia National Police.
“Holding a ToT will aid the objective of regular awareness on human rights issues among law enforcement agencies in a sustainable manner, by equipping the security officers on the ability to conduct human rights training sessions,” the OHCHR observed.
