President George M. Weah has officially commissioned the newly constructed Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) Congo Town Substation in the Transformer Community, on the Old Road.
Implemented under the “Monrovia Consolidation of Electricity Transmission and Distribution” Project, the construction of the substation is funded by the European Union (EU) under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) with a total budget of Euro 48.1 M (US$ 51.3 million).
The dedication of the project which brought face-to-face the Head and delegation of the EU, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning including community residents is also intended to address the increasing electricity demand in Monrovia and its environs.
Speaking at the official cutting of the ribbon of the New 66/22kV 40MW Congo Town Substation, President Weah among other things said that the dedication of the LEC substation is a clear manifestation of his government’s commitment to adequately supporting the electricity sector of Liberia.
According to him, the project also demonstrates a strong lasting and fruitful bilateral relations between Liberia and the EU, noting, “The EU has once again proven to Liberians their commitment and willingness in supporting the rebuilding process of this country.”
He added, “On this note, my government and Liberians are grateful for this great milestone and gift from the EU because this substation will now bring a great relief to residents across Montserrado County.”
President Weah however frowned on Liberians involved into power theft, wondering, “Why should we steal current knowing that it poses serious hindrance to the development of Liberia?”
“So, I am appealing to all Liberians to stop stealing current and stop the illegal connections because it is something that leads to the burning of houses and also affects the smooth running of the LEC,” he warned.
He then called on the LEC to work along with its partner aimed at putting into place a vibrant monitoring system and mechanism to control and monitor the adequate distribution of electricity across Liberia.
Earlier, the LEC Project Coordinator, Henry V. Kimber who is known as the Light Up Monrovia (LUM) project is being implemented by MBH Power Limited, Intec-Gopa, and the LEC, as it is expected to see thousands of homes and businesses in Monrovia and its environs benefiting from a safe, accessible, and cost-efficient electricity power supply from the National Grid.
According to him, with the construction of the new Congo Town substation on the Old Road, and the extension of additional three substations around Monrovia, the LEC is now providing electricity to approximately 41,000 households.
He indicated further that more than 70 communities in Central Monrovia, Sinkor, Congo Town, Paynesville, and outside of Monrovia are currently benefiting from LEC’s enhanced power supply generated by the Mount Coffee Hydro Plant with an increased capacity and use of cost-efficient means.
Mr. Kimber then lauded the government of Liberia and the EU delegation to Liberia for the continuous support towards the electricity sector of the country, as well as citizens of the Transformer Community for their tireless support and effort in ensuring that the project is actualized.
For his part, the Head of Delegation of the EU, Ambassador Laurent Delahousse said the EU is proud to be funding a project that will improve the livelihood of Liberians.
He added, “In the Global village, there can be no substantial development without electricity. Light is Life. I am proud and glad that the people of the European Union contributed with this great project to improve the livelihood of many Liberians.”
It is reported that most of Liberia lacks reliable power, although efforts to expand access to the electricity grid are ongoing through an extension from the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, connection to the West Africa Power Pool, and other internationally supported energy projects.
