Muslims Raise Issues With Protocol At July 26 Celebration

Liberian Muslims have threatened to boycott all national events if government refuses to allow Liberian Muslims to perform benediction exercise at national events in Liberia.The Liberian Muslims are also demanding an apology from protocol officers around President George Weah for what they called disrespectful attitude showed Muslims during the July 26 Independence Day celebration.

Delivering his sermon on Abraham Day, the Islamic cleric alleged that protocol officers around the President are in the constant habit of placing Muslims in the backyard at national occasions.
Imam Krayee recollected that during Liberia’s Independence Day celebration last year, both the invocation and benediction were given to Christians, while in 2019 President Weah was allowed to walk out of the program at the SKD when a Muslim was offering the benediction.
He labeled such action as an affront to the Muslim Community in the country, noting that, Islam did not come to Liberia through the back door.
Chief Imam of Liberia, Ali Krayee, reiterated an immediate apology from protocol officers surrounding President Weah due to what he called “blatant disrespect” shown them at national events since the commencement of the Weah-led Administration.
Imam Krayee mentioned that the failure to apologize to Muslims in Liberia will leave them [Muslims] with no alternative, but to boycott every national occasion that will be attended by President George Weah.
The Chief Imam said that religious tolerance in Liberia is essential to the sustenance of the country’s decade of uninterrupted peace.
Speaking further, the Chief Imam then prayed Allah’s blessing and protection over the government and people of Liberia.
Imam Krayee also called on Muslims in Liberia to sacrifice their wealth for the interest of poor Muslims across the country.
President George Weah has had a cordial working relationship with the Liberian Muslims under his leadership as evidenced by the appointment of Muslim Religious Advisor to the President- which many Liberians described as unprecedented.
Despite the existing cordiality between the Liberian leader, the Muslims are demanding an immediate apology or threaten to shun all national events here.
