The Movement for Justice Africa (MOJA) and the Liberian People’s Party (LPP) are mourning the passing of one of their founding members and ideologues, Joseph Saye Guannue.
He died Monday, 29 August, 2022 at Ganta United Methodist Hospital, Nimba County following a period of illness. Guannu would have turned 82 years old on Saturday, 17 September, 2022 but died before reaching said date.
He immensely contributed to the growth and development of both MOJA and LPP particularly in research and knowledge sharing which help both organizations build people’s consciousness thereby making demands to their respective governments at home and abroad mainly on the African continent.
Guannue was the running mate to Togba-Nah Tipoteh during the presidential and legislative election in 1997 which was won by the National Patriotic Party (NPP) of former President, Charles Taylor.
He was an academician, diplomat, and historian, who founded the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at Cuttington University.
Guannue once served as Minister of State for Presidential Affairs during the lifespan of the defunct Interim Government of National Unity (IGNU) then led by the late Amos Claudius Sawyer.
He also served as Liberia Ambassador to the United States and Canada. He also lectured as adjunct faculty at the University Of Liberia Graduate School Of International Relations for many years prior to his illness. In February this year, he was honoured by the Government of Liberia for his immense contribution to the preservation of Liberia’s history and at programs marking the celebration of Liberia’s bicentennial.
