An official of the Ministry of Education and Coordinator for the Technical Vocational Educational Training [TVET], Mr. Joseph Parker has craved authorities of Ministries and Agencies as well as private entities particularly institutions where young people on job training from Kids’ Education Engagement Project or (KEEP) to have them absorbed into their respective institutions.
Speaking over the weekend during Regional Meeting of KEEP’s trainees and facilitators attended including trainees on internship, Mr. Parker said KEEP which is a Non-Governmental Organization with support from the Danish government, is providing skill trainings for young people to enable them obtain job.
According to him, to meet the target of the NGO’s objective is intended to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor and for government to provide job opportunities for those young people who have graduated and are on job trainings at various institutions of government.
He said the NGO project is a pilot project if the Danish government is to continue the support through requisite institution; there must be a positive impact- and that is, we as government must consolidate efforts aimed at seeking employment opportunities for young people. Adding, “Let’s make sure after training, our young people should get job”.
KEEP is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) aimed at pushing several things with emphasis in promoting literacy and transformative learning for the young people. KEEP also works with other local organizations particularly to provide skills training and computer literacy for Liberian youths.
Also speaking during an exclusive interview with KEEP’s Program Coordinator, Mr. Desmond Samuels explained that the objective of the program is to make young people in Liberia self-reliant to enable them get job, “Because we believe if you do not have skills training, it would be very difficult to get employment”.
He said KEEP is a 4-yr pilot project that is currently in 7 counties. According to him, it has completed phase-1 which was awareness component of the project. He said phase-ii is the skills training component. As part of the project, Mr. Samuels said 11 young people are on internship while twelve on vocational training studying computer including three persons living with disabilities at AMEU.
He said KEEP is the implementing partner, while Oxfam is providing the funding through the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Giving the background of the project, Mr. Samuels explained that the Danish government is funding the project because survey shows that Liberia is making significant progress in sustaining the peace- citing conduct of the free, fair election having peaceful transition of power but what is lacking according the survey is iniquity- which the survey describes as a serious risk.
The report shows that the gap between the rich and the poor is high. According to Samuels, for the Danish government, the project is aimed at closing the gap thereby providing skills trainings for young people, including the less privileged, disability community for development.
Mr. Samuels said the project also focuses on youth engagement through meaningful ways, including changing their perceptions about land rights, gender, youth engagement and education.
The program seeks to provide skills training opportunities for people with disabilities and also link them to organizations that will be prepared to employ them, according to Mrs. Moore.
“We have also been attentive on including marginalized groups, including people with disabilities because most of the times, people forget about them being part of the population,” she said.
He boasted that the program has received some positive feedbacks within the communities to incorporate beneficiaries of the program into their own businesses.
Samuels said the program will collaborate with organizations and institutions that are involved in youth engagement or youth empowerment to help in making it successful. According to him, , KEEP has opened 15 reading facilities in seven counties in Liberia since its establishment in 2014.
