Mines And Energy Unveils Hydro Project In Nimba

The Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), Charles Vmehai, has disclosed plans to build a hydro power plant at the Gbedin Waterfalls in Nimba County.
Speaking in Gompa, Minister Vmehai, furthered that the government is seeking a reputable international company to hire that will build the hydro to supply electricity to the rural communities in and out of Liberia for a very low cost in line with President Boakai’s pro-poor agenda.
According to Minister Vmehai, the project is among the government key national projects that are expected to kick-off soon and that completed, the project aims to contribute to reducing the high cost of electricity in the country.
Minister Vmehai made the statement during LERC public hearing on the reduction of tariff on electricity and the cost of meters, that was held on February 18, 2025, in Nimba.
The intent to build hydro for the supply of electricity is getting to be a everyday political topic by the local authorities’ executives appointed by President Boakai.
Since the beginning of 2025, the main road leading to the waterfall has been covered with untrimmed vegetation, thereby making vehicular movement into the vicinity of the waterfall impassable.
Our reporter observed that the vegetative growth is infested with insects and other dangerous creatures.
Gbedin is among several other towns in Nimba that were selected by the Ministry of Agriculture to establish a mechanical center for cooperative farmers who are engaged in the production of rice and other vegetables.
On the question of how soon the Gbedin hydro project is expected to kickoff, Minister Vmehai could not be specific but remain optimistic about the project’s implementation when all modalities are concluded.
When contacted via mobile phone, Superintendent Kou Gono, couldn’t be reached for comments as her phone rang for few minutes without answer.
When quizzed about the prospect of the Gbedin hydro project, the communication officer at the local office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Amos Kpanada, responded by saying, “I will speak with the Superintendent Kou Gono and later inform the press.”
