The Mayor of Monrovia City, John Charuk Siafa, has officially commissioned the renovation of a long-neglected public latrine in the Slipway Community on Monday November 18, 2024.
This initiative marks the first step in a broader plan to address sanitation issues in several slum areas throughout the city.
For more than eight years, the public latrine in Slipway has lain in ruins, impacting the daily lives of residents who have been forced to cope with inadequate sanitation facilities.
Mayor Siafa, who celebrated his birthday on the same day, underscored the importance of this project as part of the MCC’s commitment to the ARREST Agenda an initiative focused on enhancing the quality of life for Monrovia’s citizens.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony attended by local officials and community members, Mayor Siafa expressed his dedication to improving sanitation and waste management across the city. “Slipway is just the beginning,” he stated. “We will be moving to other slum communities to renovate their public latrines, ensuring that every resident has access to proper sanitation facilities.”
The Mayor emphasized the personal interest of President Joseph Boakai in addressing sanitation issues, highlighting that these efforts are crucial for the health and well-being of the community.
“Improving the life of the people is a mandate that I am committed to supporting with passion,” Mayor Siafa remarked.
The Chairlady of the Slipway Community, Odell Kallon, expressed her gratitude to the mayor for spearheading the renovation.
“For years, we have longed for this improvement. The state of the latrine has been a source of distress for our residents,” she said.
Kallon added that the long-awaited renovation will significantly enhance the living conditions for both the Slipway and Crown Hill Communities, which have suffered due to the dilapidated facilities.
Mayor Siafa was joined by friends and well-wishers, who, although initially gathered to celebrate his birthday, were swept up in his fervent dedication to public service.
Following the ceremony, the mayor returned to his office, where more well-wishers and employees expressed their congratulations and support during non-working hours.
This renovation project is seen as a critical step toward improving the infrastructure of Monrovia and addressing the urgent needs of its underserved communities.
As the mayor and his team embark on this mission, residents of Slipway and beyond look forward to the positive changes that improved sanitation facilities will bring to their lives.
