One of Liberia’s newest universities is expected to graduate about 67 students who have completed their studies in various academic disciplines, according to the president of the institution, Dr. Joseph T. Isaac.
The Margibi University (MU) formally Harbel College (HARCO), gained a university status and change of name in 2024 following a bill proffered by Representative Ivar K. Jones of Margibi electoral district 2, where the institution is situated.
It can be recalled that Representative Jones during the 54th Legislature introduced for enactment an Act to repeal the Act that created the Harbel College and to establish in lieu thereof the ‘Margibi University’ and grant it a charter.
The Act was passed by the House of Representatives during the 54th Legislature, and was sent to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.
Members of the Liberian Senate in the 55th Legislature then passed a unanimous vote concurring with the House of Representatives to grant the then College a Charter elevating it to the Margibi University and was subsequently signed by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai last year.
As a college then, the institution conducted two graduation exercises, which means this is the first commencement convocation for the university and the third as an institution established years back.
According to Dr. Isaac, the sixty-seven (67) students, having completed their programs in 2024, are eligible for graduation, in various disciplines.
The disciplines and the number of students according to the president include: Agribusiness 5 students, Information Technology 8 students, Secondary Education 12 students and Civil Engineering 1 student.
Others are Mechanical Engineering 7 students, Climate Change 2 students, Environmental Science 9 students, Occupational Safety and Health 3 students, Disaster Emergency Management 7 students, Public Health 2 students, Public Administration 7 students and Accounting 4 students, respectively.
He indicated that the baccalaureate service will be held on February 16, 2025 while the commencement convocation will take place on February 22, 2025 in the auditorium of the Harbel Multilateral High School.
