The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) is preparing to introduce its inaugural consumer protection regulations, marking a significant step towards safeguarding the rights of telecommunications users in Liberia.
This announcement follows a technical meeting held with key telecommunications providers, aimed at reviewing and discussing the proposed regulations.
During the meeting, the Acting Chairperson, Patrick Honnah, stressed the critical importance of consumer protection in the telecommunications sector.
“We are here to guide and protect the consumers and their rights,” Honnah stated, adding, “These regulations will address crucial issues such as fair pricing and data protection.”
The session served as an interactive platform where telecommunications providers could provide feedback and explore the practicalities of implementing the new rules.
Honnah encouraged all stakeholders to actively engage in refining the regulations noting, “Our team is committed to engaging stakeholders across various regions to gather input and ensure these regulations are effective.”
Leading the review process is the LTA’s Consumer Affairs department, headed by Consumer Manager Lekpele Nyamlon, underscored the comprehensive nature of the regulations, designed to cater to both consumer and industry needs.
“These regulations include provisions to prevent misleading advertising and ensure fair pricing,” Nyamlon explained.
A notable feature of the new regulations is the establishment of a consumer support center, intended to assist consumers in resolving disputes with their service providers and handling unresolved complaints. “This center will be a vital resource for consumers,” Nyamlon noted.
To promote widespread awareness and understanding of the new regulations, the LTA plans to conduct a nationwide tour. The tour will include visits to Maryland County, Gbarnga City, Tubmanburg, and Monrovia. “We want to ensure that every Liberian is informed about the new regulations and how they can benefit from them,” Honnah emphasized.
This initiative by the LTA highlights a commitment to creating a fair and transparent telecommunications environment in Liberia, in line with international standards and addressing long-standing consumer concerns.
