LTA Approves Promotional Prices for Mobile Services

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has granted approval for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to introduce promotional pricing for their services.

The decision, which took effect on Saturday, December 14, follows mounting complaints from users about unexplained data reductions and price hikes.
Recent consumer grievances have highlighted concerns over unexpected data cuts, leading to widespread frustration directed at both the LTA and the country’s two major GSM operators Lone star Cell MTN and Orange.

These complaints prompted the LTA to take swift action to investigate the issue and engage with key stakeholders.
In a statement released from the LTA, it acknowledges the ongoing discontent and outlined steps taken to resolve the matter.

“We are aware of the rising concerns among consumers, particularly regarding the recent unexplained data cuts, and we are committed to finding immediate solutions,” said the LTA.
The Authority met with representatives from the National Association of Telecom Consumers (NATELCO), consumer advocates, and MNOs on Friday, December 13, 2024.

The discussions aimed to address the specific issues affecting consumers, including pricing transparency and service quality.
As a result of these consultations, the LTA confirmed that MNOs would be authorized to roll out special promotional pricing for consumers.

The new rates are expected to offer relief to customers by temporarily reducing costs for data services and other mobile telecom offerings.
“The LTA has authorized Mobile Network Operators to begin offering promotional prices effective Saturday, December 14, 2024,” the LTA’s statement read. “This adjustment follows a series of consultations aimed at addressing public concerns about telecommunications service pricing.”
The Authority also emphasized that this move is just the first step in a broader effort to tackle ongoing pricing issues. “During this promotional period, the LTA will continue to engage with consumers, interest groups, and MNOs to further address concerns related to the price of data and other telecom services,” the statement added.
Consumers have welcomed the LTA’s intervention, though many remain cautious, hoping that the new pricing structure will be both fair and sustainable in the long term.
As the promotional period unfolds, all eyes will be on the MNOs and the LTA to ensure that the changes lead to tangible benefits for consumers, with continued dialogue expected in the coming weeks.
