The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) expresses deep sorrow over the passing of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.
They praised President Carter for his selfless and unwavering support toward Liberia’s post-conflict Rule of Law program, which significantly enhanced access to justice for all Liberians.
In a press release, the LNBA highlighted the impactful roles played by the Carter Center’s Rule of Law Program (formerly known as the Global Access to Information Initiative).
The program worked collaboratively with the LNBA, the Government of Liberia (GOL), civil society organizations, and regional and international partners to improve governance and ensure access to justice through enhanced transparency and accountability.
The LNBA noted that the Carter Center’s Rule of Law Project successfully identified critical justice needs, developed and implemented civic education campaigns, and addressed short-term gaps to strengthen Liberia’s formal justice system.
In June 2022, the Carter Center and the LNBA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide pro bono legal assistance to citizens in need across Bong, Nimba, Lofa, and Grand Gedeh Counties.
Under the agreement, the Carter Center covered all associated costs, including lodging, transportation, per diems, filing fees, and photocopying.
The program was funded by the U.S. State Department Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
The collaborative effort involved: Case identification, Engagement with LNBA leadership, Lawyer recruitment and training, Field deployment, Regular case review, and reporting.
The LNBA emphasized that these efforts were instrumental in bridging justice gaps in Liberia’s underserved communities.
The LNBA also extended heartfelt condolences to President Joe Biden, the government, and the people of the United States on the passing of President Carter; describing him as an irreplaceable global legal icon.
The legacy of President Jimmy Carter in supporting Liberia’s justice system will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone in the nation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance, accountability, and access to justice for all.
In another development, the LNBA strongly condemned the recent surge in mob violence across Liberia, describing it as a grave threat to the rule of law.
The Bar Association expressed concern over the increasing brutality and frequency of mob violence, where alleged criminals are often beaten, injured, or killed without due process.
The lawyers noted that such acts not only undermine Liberia’s judicial system but also pose a danger to law enforcement officers attempting to intervene.
The LNBA reminded Liberians that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court, entitled to bail as a constitutional right, except in capital offenses.
The statement emphasized that mob violence cannot and must not replace the judicial process, and called on the public to exercise restraint and allow the rule of law to prevail in all cases of alleged crime.
The LNBA urged all Liberians to respect the justice system and reject mob violence.
They reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for justice, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that every citizen has access to fair legal representation.
