The Liberia National Students’ Union (LINSU) has expressed excitement over the appointment of its president, James Gbelee-Washington, by President Joseph Boakai, to serve on the prestigious National Youth Advisory Council. This council, which is part of the Office of the President, includes key youth representatives such as the President of the Federation of Liberian Youth and the Speaker of the Mano River Union Youth Parliament, Liberia Chapter.
In a release issued by the students’ union following the appoint, the national executive committee welcomed the decision of the Liberian leaders terming it as ‘a momentous appointment’, which underscores President Boakai’s commitment to empowering young people in Liberia.
The Union believes this decision is a clear demonstration of the President’s desire to amplify youth voices and create avenues for meaningful youth participation in national development discussions.
According to LINSU, by including young leaders in decision-making processes, President Boakai is paving the way for inclusive governance that recognizes the critical role of youth in shaping the future of the nation.
“We express our sincere gratitude to President Boakai for his foresight in establishing the National Youth Advisory Council and for his unwavering dedication to supporting young leaders,” the statement from LINSU’s National Executive Committee said. Adding that “This is a monumental step in promoting youth involvement in policy-making, and it is a testament to the President’s vision for an inclusive, progressive Liberia.”
LINSU, as the foremost representative body for Liberia’s students, has pledged to actively support the objectives of the newly formed council. The Union emphasized that President Gbelee-Washington’s participation will be grounded in a commitment to advancing the interests of Liberian students and ensuring their voices are heard in shaping policies that directly affect their future.
The Union also reassured the public that while it remains dedicated to supporting the goals of the council, it will continue to uphold its core values of autonomy and independence. The group highlighted the importance of integrity, transparency, and good governance as principles that President Gbelee-Washington will carry with him in his new role.
Looking ahead, LINSU is eager to collaborate with the council and other stakeholders to address the pressing challenges facing Liberia’s youth and students. Key areas of focus will include improving access to education, fostering innovation, and creating opportunities for youth empowerment.
Through continued collaboration, the union believes that the path to a more inclusive and prosperous Liberia is achievable, one that uplifts the voices of young people and makes them active participants in national development and peace-building efforts.
