Liberia Wins Gold, Bronze In Accra Chess Competition

Representing the Liberian Chess Community, Chess Master, Daniel Kolliemelen, and former champion, Thomas Saah, were recently in action in Accra, Ghana, at the Second Accra Classics hosted by the West Africa Chess Academy (WACA).

The event started on Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, and concluded on Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, at the Mercy Adelaide Aforo Asante Centre of Excellence in Accra, bringing together a total of 35 participants from five (5) different West African Chess Federations.

Countries represented in the competition through their respective federations were Liberia, Ghana, Togo, Ivory Coast, and the Gambia.

The two top Liberian Chess players won two medals, which came in Blitz and Classical Chess display. In the Blitz or Speed Chess category of the 2023 Accra Classics, CM Daniel Kolliemelen secured Gold by defeating fellow Liberian Thomas Saah in the deciding final match. CM Kolliemelen is one of Liberia’s most experienced chess players, and has adequately represented the country at several international events.

Former National Chess Champion of Liberia, Thomas Saah, was able to finish third in the final ranking at the second Accra Classic, in the Classical category. He had a stunning performance, winning 5 out of 5 in his first five (5) games of the tournament.

Other representatives of the Liberia Chess Federation are Fide Masters Barcon Harmon and Jacob Jallah, and Victor Nyepon.
