Liberia’s Lone Star took a giant step in out-passing neighboring Sierra Leone in the hunt for qualification to the group stages of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a comfortable 3-1 win in Monrovia in the first leg of the preliminary round.
Coach Butler’s men who were more clinical than past performances will have a vital three points and three goals to rely on going into the second leg of the first round next Sunday, September 8, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Thanks to the coach farsightedness by throwing into the game the legs of Tonia Tisdell and Mohammed Sangare, both of whom inspired the lighting up of the team’s performance therefore resulting to a comfortable home win.
Lone Star had to successfully complete the job in the absence of skipper William Jebor, Anthony Laffor and Eugene Swen who could not show up for the match owing to several other reasons.
The midweek encounter saw an undoubtedly hungry-crowd, much of whom had gone to see the magic of new head coach, controversial Peter James Butler, following a mouthwatering spell with Botswana that saw them made headlines on the international scene as well as the youthful talented foreign based contingents.
It was two of Lone Star’s new boys, Terrence Tisdell and Mohammed Sangare that stole the show with a goal from the skipper of the night, Sam Johnson that saw Liberia recording a three goal score-line at the SKD Sports Complex for the first time since 2011, when they defeated Gambia 3-2 in an international friendly.
The 2019 Malaysian Super League Golden Boot winner Kpah Sherman led the frontline for the red, white and blue men, and equally kept the visitors’ defense busy as he came close to putting the Lone Star ahead on separate occasions.
The 3-1 win might give Coach Butler some breathing space as the visitors presented some scaring moments especially after getting the 56th minute consolation which was assisted by Musa Kamara, Quame Quee leveled the score and the table had turned for a Liberian team that saw itself under pressure for a win at home. A 1-0 defeat in Freetown will still see Liberia advancing but Butler’s men will have to avoid a troubling 2-0 defeat or a defeat conceding above two goals without scoring if they are to reach the group stage.
Ashley Williams started in goal, Joel Johnson was at right-back, 3rd division side Pags FC defender, Gasimu Kouyateh was posted at the left-back position, while Alvin Maccornel and Teah Dennis were paired in center defense.
In the midfield, Allen Njie partnered Murphy Oscar Dorley and Seth Hellberg, who also made his first appearance for the Lone Star. Kpah Sherman started as the lone striker with Real Salt Lake forward Sam Johnson and Terrance Tisdell of Baroka FC playing both wings.
The second goal of the match came four minutes after Mo Sangare was introduced. The goal was a result of a second penalty awarded to the host; this time Sam Johnson was brought down in the box. Sangare stepped up and converted the penalty to put Liberia 2-1 ahead.
Few minutes later, with the crowd chanting we want goal, Sam Johnson’s insistent effort saw him produce a fine individual goal thus changing the score-line to whopping 3-1 which gave Liberia some breathing space ahead of the away fixture in four days. The Real Salt Lake man capitalized on a defensive error from Sierra Leone’s Mustapha Dumbuya to increase the score for Liberia.
Liberia is now in the driving seat and will need at least a draw to reach the group stage of the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Liberia is expected to leave for Sierra Leone today, Friday as the first batch of seven persons is already in Freetown.
