Liberia Prepares For First-Ever Diaspora-Liberians Annual Return

The Government of Liberia, through its Diaspora Office at the Ministry of State and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has announced the formation of a National Steering Committee to organize the inaugural Diaspora Liberians Annual Return 2024 (D-LAR24), set to take place from December 1 to December 31, 2024.
The event, themed “Liberia, the Destination of African Diaspora,” aims to invite Liberians and those of Liberian heritage worldwide to return home to celebrate their cultural roots and contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development.
This initiative aligns with President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, which focuses on enhancing sectors like tourism and infrastructure. Mr. Erasmus T. Williams heads the Diaspora Office, with Mr. Charles Blake, co-chairing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The National Steering Committee comprises members from both public and private sectors, including the Ministries of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Finance, as well as various civil society groups.
The committee will oversee the planning and execution of D-LAR24, with Dr. Clarice Ford-Kulah and Mr. Emmanuel Wettee, appointed as Chairperson and Co-chair of the planning sub-committee.
D-LAR24 will serve as a platform to revitalize Liberia’s tourism sector, reconnect individuals with their heritage, and attract investment in the country’s cultural and natural resources. Key highlights of the event include:
-Diaspora Investment Forum, A platform for investors to explore opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and cultural sectors.
-Cultural Showcase Exhibitions featuring Liberian art, music, fashion, and cuisine, celebrating the nation’s unique cultural identity.
-Guided Tours: Exclusive tours of Liberia’s most scenic locations, such as Robertsport, Libassa Ecolodge, and the historical city of Edina. -Networking Opportunities: Events facilitating connections between diaspora members, local businesses, and government officials to foster investment partnerships.
-Youth Engagement, Training programs focused on skills development in tourism, hospitality, and the arts.
In line with President Boakai’s vision, who stated, “Other countries in Africa could be the gateway, but Liberia is the Destination,” the government emphasizes its commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment to strengthen national unity and economic growth.
D-LAR24 is set to reconnect Liberians with their heritage, celebrate the nation’s cultural wealth, and engage in meaningful partnerships to build a prosperous future for Liberia. The government invites all Liberians abroad to participate in this historic gathering, contributing to the ongoing development and revitalization of the nation.
