Liberia, Partners Launch $7M Adolescent Girls Empowerment Project

The Government of Liberia, in partnership with the Irish Government and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has officially launched a transformative five-year initiative titled “Protect, Empower and Nurture – Harnessing the Full The program, with a total budget of US$7 million, is set to address the pressing challenges faced by adolescent girls across the country.
Aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy, improving nutrition, lowering anemia rates, and enhancing the overall wellbeing of adolescent girls, the initiative marks a significant step towards gender equality and youth empowerment in Liberia.
Speaking at the launch, Liberia’s Minister of Health, Louis Kpoto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the cause.
“We at the Ministry of Health are working to reduce the indexes on teenage pregnancy,” she stated, emphasizing the ministry’s active role in reaching communities in need.
The Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Laura Golakeh, highlighted the alignment of the initiative with Liberia’s broader vision of creating a more equitable and prosperous nation.
“We must be deliberate and inclusive. Vulnerable girls on the streets many of whom are victims of drug addiction, exploitation, or even modern-day slavery are not beyond our reach. They are Liberian children deserving dignity, protection, and care,” she said passionately.
Representing the United Nations, UN Resident Coordinator, Christine Umutoni shed light on the urgent needs of adolescent girls, who make up 35% of Liberia’s population.
She pointed to alarming statistics, including a 30% unintended pregnancy rate, widespread malnutrition, and exposure to gender-based violence and harmful practices like female genital mutilation.
“This program recognizes the potential of young people as critical agents of Liberia’s development,” Umutoni added.
UNFPA Deputy Country Representative, Leonard Kamugisha explained that the program, a joint effort between UNFPA and UNICEF, will be piloted in Grand Gedeh, Rivercess, and Montserrado Counties, focusing on the most vulnerable and marginalized girls.
“The goal is to ensure that 107,501 adolescent girls have access to comprehensive social services in safe, inclusive environments, supporting their health, development, and empowerment,” he said.
Ireland’s Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, commended Liberia’s commitment to gender equality through its “ARREST” agenda.
“We must challenge harmful norms, empower girls to claim their rights, and ensure every investment delivers lasting impact. This project is vital not just for girls but also for young boys,” he stated.
The official launch drew participation from school students, government ministries, international agencies, and community organizations symbolizing a united front in the fight for a more inclusive and nurturing Liberia for all adolescents.
