Liberia, Japan Strengthen Diplomatic Ties At Tokyo Talks

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Nyanti, held bilateral talks with Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kamikama Yoko, during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).
The meeting highlighted the deepening cooperation between the two nations, focusing on development assistance and mutual support on global issues.
Minister Nyanti extended greetings from President Joseph Boakai and expressed gratitude to Japan for its ongoing support.
She particularly emphasized Japan’s contributions to major infrastructure projects in Liberia, including the Japan Freeway and the planned rehabilitation and expansion of the Gabriel Tucker Bridge, a key corridor to the Freeport Road.
The discussions also touched on Japan’s broader assistance programs in Liberia. Minister Nyanti acknowledged the impact of the Japan Rice Monetization Program and various human capacity development initiatives facilitated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Minister Nyanti presented a Bilateral Note outlining Liberia’s key development priorities, which include infrastructure improvements, access to safe drinking water, and solar energy projects for public institutions.
Minister Kamikama, in response, congratulated Minister Nyanti on her recent appointment and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to Liberia’s development.
She highlighted Japan’s ongoing efforts in transportation infrastructure and commended Liberia’s dedication to democracy, noting the successful conduct of three elections as a testament to the nation’s stability.
The talks concluded with both ministers agreeing to strengthen Japan-Liberia relations, particularly in the lead-up to TICAD 9 next year.
Minister Kamikama expressed Japan’s intention to further support Liberia’s nation-building efforts through quality infrastructure, universal health coverage, and initiatives focused on women, peace, and security.
The ministers also agreed to collaborate on promoting these values across Africa, underscoring the shared commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
This meeting marks a continuation of the strong bilateral relationship between Liberia and Japan, with both countries poised to work closely on development issues and international cooperation in the years to come.
