Liberia women under-20 have ended as third place winner of the recent edition of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A tournament played in Senegal.
The maidens’ participation in the competition started with a blast of action in the group and early final stages.
They played three games scoring 16 goals to qualify in the group stage but met an unfortunate twist of turn in the semifinals where they were defeated by the Guinea Bissau on post-match penalties after a 0ne-all.
Throughout the competition, Lone Star women played four games winning three and losing one against Guinea Bissau, a team that came through to the finals as the best losing side. A total of 18 goals were scored and four conceded.
In individual’s achievement from the competition, Ewardline Jackson clinched the highest goals scorer award after she came through with two straight hat tricks in six goals.
With the astonishing performance pulled out by Edwardline, she sat among the Most Valuable Players contenders but was unfortunate to have the award out to Fatumata Yaya Samoura of Guinea.
However, the Senegalese has clinched the second WAFU women championship on their own soil after beating Guinea Bissau 0-3 in the 2024 on Wednesday May 29, at the Stade Lat Dior in Senegal Dakar.
The young lionesses won the title with nine points from their zone while Mail won the Fair-play and Liberia booked the 3rd place as well.
Liberian journey in the competition
Lone Star played their opening game on May 21 in the Senegalese Capitol with a 2-0 clean sheet victory against Guinea with Erica Pearson and Patience Kawalo on the scoring chart.
On Thursday Sierra Leone fell to Liberia on a 7-0 defeat, it came as a heavy win for the girls in the red, White and Blue outfit with goal puncher Edwardline Jackson scoring her first hattrick. The group stage ended with another 7-0 win for Liberia against Mauritania.
