The government, through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, has ramped up efforts to combat illegal mining and enforce safer electrical practices nationwide.
Deputy Minister Daniel Sando recently announced a series of measures aimed at curbing illicit mining operations and improving industry standards.
Minister Sando revealed that some individuals have been exploiting loopholes by fraudulently obtaining Class C mining licenses while engaging in large-scale Class A mining—an outright violation of the law. In response, the government has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal mining activities.
As part of this initiative, authorities recently shut down an unlawful mining site in Mad House, Electoral District 1, Grand Bassa County. The site, operated by foreign nationals, was involved in unauthorized resource extraction.
Officials confiscated illegal mining equipment, and those responsible have been turned over to the Ministry of Justice for further investigation. Beyond mining, the government is also taking decisive steps to regulate the electrical sector. In collaboration with the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC), the Ministry of Mines and Energy is introducing a national certification program for electricians and contractors. This initiative will ensure that only qualified professionals provide industrial and residential electrical services, reducing the risk of fire outbreaks and faulty installations. The certification process will include rigorous assessments to verify competency in the field.
“The government is committed to safeguarding our natural resources and ensuring public safety,” Minister Sando emphasized.
He added, “These enforcement measures are essential to uphold the law, prevent illegal activities, and promote professionalism in key industries.”
The government urges miners, electrical professionals, and all stakeholders to comply with regulations, emphasizing that adherence to legal standards is vital for economic growth, public safety, and a secure business environment in Liberia.
