The Liberia Coast Guard (LCG) on June 28, 2024, conducted a critical rescue operation for some residents of Kpelleh Town in Johnsonville, following a severe flooding caused by the heavy rainfall.
Recognizing the annual threats posed by Liberia’s rainy season, the Ministry of National Defense and the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) High Command launched “Operation Rising Tide.” And this mission aimed to perform search and rescue operations in flood-affected areas to ensure the safety and well-being of residents during natural disasters.
“Operation Rising Tide” symbolizes the urgency and importance of Coast Guard missions during flooding, reflecting efforts to overcome the challenges posed by natural disasters, explained Captain John S-Kek Willie, Commander of the Liberia Coast Guard.
During the mission in Kpelleh Town, LCG sailors heroically rescued approximately 35 residents, including elderly people, pregnant women, and children and despite the operational challenges, the community has since returned to normalcy due to the cessation of the rain.
Petty Officer 1 (PO1) Clinton Slewro, who led the operation, commended community members for their assistance in identifying stranded residents and recounted an emotional moment when a resident reported that his entire family was trapped in their attic, their lives at risk due to the flooding.
The joy and relief of the rescued residents were palpable, with PO1 Slewro expressing his gratitude for the cooperation of the community leadership and residents.
In a statement following the rescue, Minister of National Defense Brigadier General Geraldine J. George (Rtd) emphasized the AFL’s preparedness and commitment to addressing flood and sea erosion situations across the country, acknowledging Liberia’s susceptibility to these natural hazards.
Brigadier General Davidson Fayiah Forleh, Chief of Staff of the AFL, praised the LCG Search and Rescue Team for their exemplary performance and assured the public of the AFL’s continued readiness to support civil authorities during such emergencies, reaffirming their dedication to protecting and serving the Liberian people.
