For the first time in the history of the Liberia Football Coaches Association (LFCA), it has organized a football tournament called the Coaches District Tournament titled ‘Who Owns Montserrado.’
In an interview, the association’s president, Barent K. Karr, revealed that the tournament is the first of its kind since the association was founded with only registered members of the association from nine districts in Montserrado County are participating in the tournament.
Coach Karr narrated that this tournament is under his leadership and that it is now going to be played annually so that they can keep themselves physically fit to be able to carry on their coaching exercises properly.
“Definitely this tournament is being organized to ensure that our coaches participate in every district level within Montserrado County and that this is going to be one of our annual sporting events for the coaches of Liberia. It is organized to also ensure that our members remain on course in their coaching functions and the tournament is called the Coaches Association District Tournament where that participants are all coaches from the various districts of Montserrado County,” says Coach Karr.
He stressed that the tournament got underway on May 15, 2023 at the SKD practice pitch with nine out of the 17 districts in Montserrado County and one guest team of former Lone Star players making it 10 teams that started the first edition of the Coaches District Tournament but he is confident that more district would add in the 2024 edition of the competition.
Five teams out of the 10 teams that started the tournament have reached the quarterfinal and they include Districts 9, 10, 3, 17 and 8 while the best loser, District 4, made them for the quarterfinal spot.
In Saturday’s early kickoff, District 10 dumped former Lone star players 1-0, after District 11 forfeited to District 9; District 15 wiped District 3, 2-1 and District 17 overpowered District 13, 3-0 while District 8 beat District 4, 3-2.
Coach Karr promised to take the tournament to Margibi and Bong Counties soon and called on coaches of the two counties to now begin their intensive training for the competition challenges ahead and hoped that they all will follow the rules governing the tournament because the tournament is about helping to keep the coaches physically fit.
