Former Information Minister, Amb. Lewis Brown, has urged President George Weah to withdraw the nomination of Cllr. A. Ndubusi Nwabudike as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission.
Amb. Lewis Brown, former Liberia’s Ambassador to the United Nations said , it is instructive to note that during the country difficult conflict, when citizens likely obtain the peak of distrust of one another and that even when the country election was conducted under less than full constitution authority, the NEC was never headed by non-natural born Liberians, but instead, a natural born Liberian.
Speaking on a local Radio Station in Paynesville, the onetime information boss among many things narrated that countries around the world, especially Liberia geography neighborhood, have position that are so dearest and meaningful to their history and destiny and as such, they will not surrender it to any foreigners or naturalize citizens, especially when said country natural born citizens can perform such duty honorably and competently.
According Amb. Brown, the nomination of Cllr. Ndubusi Nwabudike to chair the NEC not only defeat the proposition that provide for dual citizenship for all natural born Liberian who acquire the citizenship of another country that will not be allowed to hold certain position including serving as commissioners of NEC before its goes for referendum, but also project it’s quell and paradoxical reality where its appear that President Weah is prepared to grant a naturalized Liberian more right upon acquiring Liberian citizenship then a natural born Liberian who acquiring the citizenship of another country.
He added that in a little over two years of President Weah presidency, the new NEC chair designate has been asked to head three high profile tenure position, noting that his appointment or nomination not only means that there is scarcity of any solid track record of previous achievement in government to which he can point to but also abuzz the perception of very close affinity to President Weah for which he enjoys such exceptional favors and thereby undermine public trust in his ability to protect the national interest as the head of the NEC which is required first and foremost.
Amb. Brown further alluded that as the citizenry are already in an election year, the overall democratically aspiration of the country will be better serve if a new composition of the NEC is spared reasonable public challenges to its constitution ling composition.
He averred, “It will be best for our country which has made so much progress in its democratic aspiration that the new composition of the NEC is not hunted by unresolved question of mistrust, fairness, integrity and credibility. Mr. President please consider withdrawing these nominations, especially when they continue to gender so much public disagreement, division and unnecessary round call at this time when we need to collectively focus all of our attention to fighting a virus we do not know and who deadly stains hunt all of us at this time.”
