LEON Calls For More Women Representation At Legislature

By Bill W. Cooper
As the country gears towards the conduct of referendum 2020, the Liberia Election Observation Network (LEON) with support from the Cater Center is advocating for a reform of the electoral laws.
LEON’s advocacy is directed at the 30% exclusivity of more women’s participation or representation at the governance and or political levels especially in the National Legislature.
LEON, an election monitoring group, comprises of four civil society and advocacy organizations which include the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), the Liberian Crusader for Peace (LCP), the National Union of the Disabled (NUD) and the Justice and Peace Commission (JPC), is fully sponsored by the Cater Center.
Speaking at the Jamaica Road Intellectual Disco on Sunday, February 2, FLY’s administrator, Sammitta B. Entsua, said though the law calls for a 30 percent women’s participation, their advocacy now is that they want more women to be represented in the governing process of the country.
According to Ms. Entsua, in order for women to be represented, women must first have more seats in the Legislature and that is LEON’s advocacy as the country approaches the referendum 2020.
She added that women constitute slightly more than half of the country’s population which is an equivalent of 51 percent according to the last census conducted and that this is an indication that women are a force to reckon with in any process for progress in the country; but adding that over time in Liberia’s electioneering processes, men had always been domineering traditionally.
Earlier, FLY’s president, Amos Williams, said during their observation in past elections, they noticed that the two issues of elections surround the referendum and the changing of the election laws.
Mr. Williams stressed that from the observation and considering best practices as it relates to elections, he believes that there are things that need to be changed pointing out, “The law calls 30% participation of women and we believe that it is not working well therefore this makes us to ask why women will go to political parties’ primary and fail to win?”
He described it as a “barrier” for equal participation wondering why will a political party schedule a meeting for 2:00 A.M. when in fact, a women in politics, like all other family woman should be attending to her family and other household chores between that time.
The forum’s Chairperson, Eric Collins, lauded the LEON and the Carter Center for selecting his forum to discuss electoral issues that pertain to women’s representation in goverment while at the same time pledged his group’s support in the advocacy for women’s right across the country.
