The Local Voices Liberia in partnership with Internews has begun a three-day engagement on facts checking for the Legislative reporters.
The workshop, which was held in Monrovia yesterday, June 15, 2023, brought together media practitioners from various media institutions assigned at the Legislature.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Director for Local Voices Liberia, Alpha Daffae Senkpeni said that as part of their fact checking activities, they train journalists and help to educate the public through media entities forum in order to let the public understand about fact checking or spreading uncountable misinformation.
According to him, even though information is life and also power, information can obtain and influence the decision that one makes.
“Therefore, we are working with Internews and local partners to implement media activity between now and November, and our responsibility into help counter the information especially as we move towards the elections,” he added.
Senkpeni maintained that the Liberian media and the USAID Media Activity are meant to help straighten the democracy through the media, noting that if the medium by which the media communicate do not exist then there is no democracy.
“We taught it wise to have an engagement with the journalists so that we can have a refresher about how to apply fact checking to journalism to improve the quality of the journalism that we do, because as you remain in the profession you need to improve your ability to become better,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Director of Press and Public Affairs at the House of Representatives, Robert Haynes thanked Internews, for the support through its many engagements with the media and
encouraged the participants not to misuse the opportunity given to them because it will help to make the country a better place by providing accurate information to the public.
