The Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Monie R. Captan has admonished employees of the company to seek more capacity building opportunities and prepare themselves.
He stressed that in order for LEC to thrive and meet the growing demands of the nation, employees must actively seek capacity-building opportunities that are essential to Liberia’s development.
“So, I want you, every one of you, to build your competency. That’s the only way you can become a valuable member of the team that you work for,” Captan said.
The LEC CEO emphasized the importance of continuous learning and professional development, during the company’s one-day retreat for employees at the Planning, Engineering, and Major Connections Department.
He spoke on the topic: “What kind of people do we need at LEC?”
“Yes, competency. And you know, competency is something that we build. It’s not just there. We build it every day and improve on it. You know the importance of education. The importance of education is that it teaches you how to learn. How many of you have gone beyond your job assignment to acquire more skills to improve your standing? When I came to LEC, I didn’t know anything about electricity, but I learned because you are my education,” Captan explained.
Captan continued, “If you are an engineer, try to understand procurement processes, try to understand how you manage people and your HR management, try to understand financial modeling, and try to understand the regulatory framework in which we work, because that’s the only way you can be an effective member of the team.”
The CEO highlighted that the energy sector is rapidly evolving, with new technologies and advancements emerging regularly.
To stay ahead of these changes, he urged employees to expand their knowledge and skills through various training programs, workshops, and conferences.
Captan emphasized that investing in personal growth would not only benefit individual employees, but also contribute to the overall success of the corporation.
“How do I manage people and resources in an effective and efficient way? So I’m asking each and every one of you, if you are not building your competency, to start doing it now. You would be surprised if I had a meeting and the topic came up and I didn’t know it very well,” he added.
Furthermore, Captan encouraged employees to explore opportunities beyond their immediate roles.
LEC Executive Director for Engineering and Major Connections, Dele Shobayo, said in his welcome remarks that the retreat was a wonderful opportunity for everybody to unite and to cement a relationship.
“Today, we chose this day to basically build team spirit. We have a lot of staff, and we needed an opportunity where every staff member could interact with each other,” he added.
Also speaking, Mary Broh, the Co-Chair of the LEC Taskforce, acknowledged the management team, under the astute leadership of Monie Captan, for bringing life to LEC.
She cautioned the employees to create love and passion for what they do on a daily basis in their professional lives.
“I want you to leave from here with a sense of purpose and passion for your country. You should always put your country first, you know,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, the LEC management team also awarded and certified several of their hard-working staff from the Planning, Engineering and Major Connections (PEMC) Division for their immense revenue contributions to the company over the years.
