By Grace Q. Bryant
The Acting President of the University of Liberia, Al-Hassan Conteh, has called on graduates to view their academic achievements not as mere certificates but as tools for societal transformation.
Speaking at the 104th commencement convocation in Fendall, Dr. Conteh stressed the significance of utilizing their skills, creativity, and passion to foster progress and development in Liberia.
“To our degree candidates, as you embark on this new chapter, remember that your academic degrees are not just certifications, but keys to unlocking your potential and transforming the Liberian society,” Dr. Conteh said.
He further emphasized the urgent need for graduates to contribute to national development, echoing the sentiments of President Joseph Boakai, who recently highlighted the importance of a mindset shift to build a better society.
Conteh, quoting President Boakai said, “Our mindset informs our behavior, which in turn shapes society. To build a better future, we must initiate conversations that lead to a positive mindset shift.”
Dr. Conteh encouraged the graduates to become catalysts for change, particularly in the fields such as economics, public administration, and accounting.
He urged them to challenge societal norms that hinder progress and to seek innovative solutions for Liberia’s development.
“Liberia needs transformational accountants, economists, and public administrators. Do not be content with norms that limit your growth. Instead, challenge them with innovation and a commitment to excellence,” he declared.
The Acting President also reminded the graduates that leadership is not about titles but about inspiring positive change.
He urged them to embody values of integrity, compassion, and service not only to achieve personal success but to uplift their communities and the nation.
“You are Liberia’s future leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers. Use your knowledge and skills to empower others, create opportunities, and build a better future for all,” Dr. Conteh said.
He extended his gratitude to parents, families, university administrators, faculty, staff, and students for their contributions to the graduates’ success, attributing the institution’s accomplishments to the collective efforts of the University of Liberia’s community.
The keynote speaker Ayokunle Olajubu Abraham, Managing Director of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Liberia, emphasized the transformative roles universities play in shaping both individuals and society.
He underscored the importance of education in achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which focuses on peace, security, and development.
“You are not just here to collect a degree; you are here to activate the greatness within you. The challenges you’ve faced have prepared you for the journey ahead,” Abraham said.
He added, “Whatever dream God has placed in your heart, pursue it with all your strength. Do not let challenges discourage you.”
He concluded by reminding graduates that whether they pursue careers in entrepreneurship, government, or other fields, there is no limit to what they can achieve.
