LCF Holds Chess In School Training Workshop

On Saturday, December 16, 2023, the Liberia Chess Federation, through her “Chess-in-Education” Commission, conducted a day-long workshop aimed at preparing teachers for the Chess in Education initiative.
The objective of the workshop was to prepare teachers and better equip them with the needed presentation skills required in teaching the game of chess to school-going kids.
The workshop had a total of 20 participants with years of experience in playing and teaching chess.
The opening of the training was graced by officials of the Liberia Chess Federation, including the president, Thomas Karyah; the Director for Chess in School, Kemo Sambula; Champion Bobby Ballah, and other top-ranking members, as well as players of the game of chess.
The Federation’s president, Thomas Karyah, termed the training as being fantastic and really professional, with encouraging comments, questions, and feedback from the participants. He was also delighted that the facilitators discussed chess and its importance to the development of young people across the country, as it relates to Critical Thinking and Decision Making.
According to him, the training is to support the Ministry of Education in rolling-out chess in various public and private schools in Liberia.
In conclusion, he admonished participants to make use of knowledge gained from the training and use it within their various institutions of learning.
Also speaking at the event, LCF Director of Chess in Education, Kemo Sambola, extended thanks and appreciation to the trainers of the workshop for making themselves available to conduct the process.
As one of the trainers at the LCF, Sambola took the opportunity to remind the teachers at the training about their role in shaping the minds of future generations.
The Federation’s Education Director also extended call to parents to get their students involved in chess programs.
“Take advantage of the Chess in Education ongoing program and ensure your children begin to play chess at nearby playing spots,” he said.
Meanwhile, teachers were excited to participate in training sessions, considering the new approaches they learned. Many at the training said that they were excited about the training and proud that the LCF is so committed and focused on helping them in their profession.
We are happy to be here and our coming to this training has changed the way we will present lessons to students, moving forward.
