The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has urged the majority and embattled House Speaker Fonati Koffa to respect the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, emphasizing the need for adherence to the principles of justice and the rule of law.
The Supreme Court’s decision, grounded in Articles 33 and 49 of the Liberian Constitution, was declared in alignment with the nation’s legal framework.
The LCC underscored those members of the Legislature should conduct themselves in accordance with this ruling to uphold constitutional integrity and good governance.
In a bid to mediate the legislative standoff, the LCC hosted a reconciliatory dialogue at the Providence Baptist Church on Broad Street.
The meeting brought together Speaker Fonati J. Koffa and the Opposition Majority Bloc, led by Samuel Kogar.
Both parties agreed to abide by the rule of law and uphold principles of accountability.
The Council emphasized that the Supreme Court, as the interpreter of the Constitution, provides a legal framework for governance, and its rulings must be respected to maintain stability.
In a statement, the LCC urged all parties involved to comply with the Court’s ruling, describing it as “clear and unequivocal.”
The Council warned against any actions that could undermine the judgment, calling such behavior unconstitutional and a threat to the rule of law.
“It is the position of the LCC that this ruling should bring the current legislative impasse to an end,” the statement read.
The LCC further encouraged legislators to return to regular sessions and address efforts to remove the Speaker through lawful means as outlined in the Constitution and House rules.
In addition, the Council called on other branches of government to respect the separation of powers and avoid interference in legislative matters.
It urged all lawmakers to prioritize their duties to the Liberian people, including passing the national budget and conducting peaceful legislative proceedings.
