The Concerned Youth of the Borough of Kru Town has objected to the appointment of one Tarweh D. Carter by President George Weah as the new Governor of the Borough He replaces Madam Alice Nyonsoko Weah.In a press statement issued recently, the group said it has nothing personal against Mr. Carter, but his appointment was in violation of the laws of the Borough concerning the procedure in appointing a governor in the area. The group said the appointment was in total contradiction or violation of sections 3, and 8 of the boroughs act which speaks comprehensively about how the governorship is done.
“As conscious minded young Liberians, we will always support the ideology of young people involvement into the affairs and forward match of the state. We strongly believe that this 21st century is the appropriate time for young Liberians to be given the opportunity in order to contribute to nation building. But our concern is tailored around the manner and form in which the appointment was made,”” it noted.
It contended that Section 3 of the revised 1948 Borough’s Act states that ” the Borough shall be governed by a governor who shall, upon selection and recommendation of the six (6) nominating districts chairmen and eiders shall appoint to the position by, and shall hold office doing the pleasure of the president.”
The group pointed out that section 8 also states that “no governor, under no condition, or circumstances shall be appointed by the President or any government official without the “will, knowledge, and consent” of the six (6) nominating districts, who are the policy making body of the borough and whose authority shall the governor be subject to.”
Meanwhile, the group has commended President Weah for his constant visitation to the Borough of New Kru Town, and his immediate and timely intervention into the situation involving the fire incident within the Popo beach community about few months ago.
It said it believes that the action of the President was rewarding and decision to have instructed the construction of about 50 housing units for those frustrated fire victims at the time is something that cannot be overly emphasized, stating, “today the social status of those people has somehow been improved as they have ascended from the level of zinc shacks to comfortable apartments.” ,
