Kru Town Comes Alive With ‘Borough Cup’ Competition

The management of Global Pharma Football Club and other sports enthusiasts are hopeful of restoring football spirit to the Borough of New Kru Town through the launch of an annual off-season football competition named and styled the Borough Cup.
According to official of the Liberia Football Association national first division league outfit, the spirit of football within the township has become dead for a relative long time making it impossible to have teams around the area producing players for the national league.
Global Pharma’s president Sylvanus Kelvin Morris on last Saturday revealed that the club and other pundits want to see the historical D. Tweh Stadium recalling its momentum and attracting attention with spectacular soccer actions using the Borough Cup.
The inaugural edition of the event according to Morris will officially commence on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 and will last for nearly 11 days featuring eight teams, including six top-rated first division clubs and two third division Borough clubs.
He explained that it is the first time that the team and organizing committee is using such event to reignite the lost spirit of the game in the Borough, which has waned over the past years and encouraged the young athletes within the Borough to seize the opportunity to showcase their talents; allowing them to be recognized and scouted on a larger stage.
Morris also urged fans to come out in full support of their teams for the betterment of the sector as participating teams are now in full preparation for the competition which is expected to commence on Wednesday.
During the launch of the Cup, the draw conducted pulled out Freeport FC to kick-off the tournament against the home-based side, Patrina FC as Paynesville FC battles the host Global Pharma.
On Thursday, Discoveries Sports Association will face Blackman Warrior, followed by a match between LISCR and LIYOFA to close the day’s encounters.
The tournament will follow a knockout format with home and away matches, concluding on August 18, 2024.
The champions will walk away with LD100, 000, while the runners-up will receive LD50, 000 while the Man of the match awards and individual accolades will also be presented at the end of the competition.
Morris clarified that the tournament is non-political and is primarily aimed at preparing his club for the new league season and reviving the spirit of football in the Borough of New Kru Town.
The tournament is officially sponsored by Dixon Seeboe, Montserrado County District 16 Representative, with additional support from Samuel Weah, a former representative candidate, along with other individuals and institutions supporting the inaugural edition.
