The Director of Sports at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Thomas Kojo has been appointed to fill in the position of interim coach for the Liberia men’s national team after the resignation of Coach Mario Marinica.
The former national team head coach was brought back to the task over the weekend after the football house and the Ministry decided to fill in the vacancy created by the pressuring resignation of the Romanian tactician that spend less than ten months of his two-year contract with the Lone Star.
Though the resignation of Mario Marinica had not been confirmed nor made public by the LFA or the Sports Ministry, a recent communication was issued by the official social media platform of the FA and the national team informing the public that Coach Kojo would be in charge of the team rather than Mario’s deputy Kelvin Segbwe.
The release noted, “The Liberia Football Association, in consultation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has appointed Thomas Kojo as interim head coach of the men’s senior national team, the Lone Star.”
It further said, “He will lead the team in the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers and the remaining matches of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.”
In addition to his coaching duties,Kojo will select his own backroom staff ahead of the competitions. His appointment follows the resignation of Romanian coach Mario Marinica.
The Lone Star will face Sierra Leone in the first round of the CHAN qualifiers, with the first leg scheduled for October 25-27 and the second leg between November1-3, 2024.
Later in November, the team will play Togo at home and Algeria away in the final two rounds of the African Cup of Nations’ qualifiers.
