The Government of Liberia has announced the arrival of a fresh consignment of rice donated by the Government of Japan, weighing 2,640 metric tons.
The shipment, part of Japan’s ongoing support to Liberia, docked at the Freeport of Monrovia on Friday, March 28, 2025, aboard the MV Adalady.
According to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the rice will be monetized under the Japanese Grant Commodity Program, with proceeds earmarked for socio-economic development projects outside the national budget.
This initiative aligns with Japan’s continued commitment to supporting Liberia’s economic growth and food security.
The rice will be available for purchase at three designated distributors; Fouta Corporation, Northwest, and United Commodities Inc.—at a wholesale price of US$15.75 and a retail price of US$16.50 per bag.
The government has urged the public to report to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Inspectorate Division or the Japanese Counterpart Value Fund Secretariat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs any vendors selling the rice above the official prices.
Authorities emphasized that strict monitoring measures are in place to prevent price gouging and ensure fair distribution.
In a statement, the Government of Liberia expressed deep appreciation to Japan for its continued assistance.
“The Government of Liberia, on behalf of the people of Liberia, graciously appreciates the government and people of Japan for their unwavering support towards the country’s socio-economic development programs,” the release noted.
Japan has been a key partner in Liberia’s development efforts, contributing to infrastructure, education, and food security initiatives.
This latest rice donation follows previous shipments aimed at supporting Liberia’s food supply and economic resilience.
