The Integrity Watch Liberia (IWL) and the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia are set to establish a transformative partnership on Monday, December 9, 2024, by signing a €170,000 grant agreement.
The project, titled “Strengthening Inclusive Governance and Natural Resource Accountability in Liberia,” seeks to advance transparency, accountability, and sustainable governance in Liberia’s natural resource sector.
The grant, provided through Irish Aid, underscores a shared commitment between Integrity Watch Liberia and the Embassy of Ireland to confront key governance challenges.
It aims to bolster Liberia’s policy frameworks to ensure natural resources are managed equitably and sustainably for the benefit of all Liberians.
Over the course of one year, the project will focus on Legislative Strengthening, Equipping the Legislature with the tools and the knowledge needed to effectively scrutinize policies and agreements related to natural resource management.
The project will also empowering Civil Society Amplifying the advocacy efforts of civil society organizations to demand greater accountability and transparency in resource governance.
It will regulate oversight, strengthen the oversight and coordination functions of key regulatory bodies, including the Ministry of Lands, Mines, and Energy; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); and the National Bureau of Concessions, ensuring adherence to policies.
It will highlight inclusive governance fostering participation by marginalized groups, including women and youth, in decision-making processes related to governance and resource management.
The project will directly engage and benefit to members of the Legislature and to regulatory institutions such as the EPA and the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Civil Society Organizations and community leaders in local communities affected by natural resource management
Through platforms for dialogue and engagement, the project will empower citizens to demand accountability from decision-makers and create a culture of transparency and inclusive governance.
IWL’s Executive Director Harold M. Aidoo, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “This grant underscores the importance of inclusive and transparent governance in Liberia. By addressing longstanding challenges in resource management, we aim to foster equitable development and sustainable practices for the benefit of all Liberians.”
The Irish Ambassador to Liberia echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Ireland’s dedication to Liberia’s progress and pointed out, “Liberia’s natural resources have immense potential for driving development. This partnership reflects our shared vision for good governance, transparency, and sustainability in the management of these vital resources.”
The signing ceremony, scheduled to take place at the Irish Embassy in Monrovia, represents a significant step forward in advancing institutional accountability and ensuring that Liberia’s natural wealth contributes to the well-being of its people.
