Internal Affairs Minister Cautions Lofa Authorities

By Laurina B. Lormia
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Francis Nyumalin has called on local authorities in Salayea Administrative and Zorzor Districts to steer clear of cases with legal implications.
The ceremony served as a reminder of the delicate balance between traditional leadership and the judicial system, a balance that must be respected to ensure justice and fairness for all.
On Monday November 18, 2024 addressing newly inducted Chiefs, General Town Chiefs, and Clan Chiefs, Minister Nyumalin stressed that such cases, particularly those involving serious offenses like rape, fall strictly within the remit of the judicial system.
According to him, local authorities must remain within their jurisdiction and avoid meddling in matters that require court’s adjudication.
He underscored the importance of respecting the rule of law and allowing judicial institutions to handle cases appropriately.
“The induction of local leaders came against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to strengthen governance in Lofa County. The ceremony does not only reaffirm the leaders’ responsibilities but also highlighted the government’s ARREST agenda, aimed at fostering accountability, respect for the rule of law, and good governance,” Minister Nyumalin emphasized.
However, Superintendent Lavela Massaquoi urged the newly inducted leaders to use their positions to make tangible improvements in their districts.
He encouraged them to prioritize initiatives that directly impact the lives of their constituents, stating, “Your leadership can spark transformation. Let us focus on programs that uplift our people,” he said.
“As these leaders assume their new roles, residents in Lofa County are optimistic about the prospects of stronger governance, better accountability, and community-focused development,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lofa County Representative Augustine Chiewolo assured the chiefs and local officials of the unwavering support of the County Legislative Caucus, highlighting the need for collaboration between local and national leaders to drive meaningful development initiatives in the region.
Representative Chiewolo concluded that, the Legislative Caucus stands ready to support initiatives that will bring real change to the communities, adding, “Together, we can achieve significant progress if we respect each other’s roles and work as a team.”
