The Internal Affairs Ministry has halted the auditing of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and its Director General, Henry O. Williams, citing “procedural error” on the part of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) which was conducting the auditing.
Internal Affairs Minister, Varney Sirleaf made the disclosure yesterday when he appeared on the state-owned radio in Monrovia. He said it is not good to castigate people without any basis or reason.
Therefore, he continued: “I halted the auditing until after the board meeting which is due today (Thursday) which was yesterday following which it could continue because we cannot stop it.”
However, Sirleaf fell short to state the “procedural error” but believes that the allegation first needed to be looked at by the Board before calling for an audit because anything that affects the NDMA also affects the Board.
He said he did call the Internal Auditing Agency (IAA) General Director, Emmanuel Bartee Nyansuah, and pleaded with him to stop the proceeding until the right procedure is done.
Recently, the Legislature ordered three auditing firms including the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), Internal Audit Agency (IAA) and the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to audit the National Disaster Management Agency due to report of massive corruption under the leadership of Williams.
In August, Sinoe County’s Senator, Jaye Milton Teahjay, ordered the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) to conduct an audit into an alleged “Corruption Scandal” in the tone of L$2 million including US$30,000 plus intended for employees’ salaries that were reportedly siphoned by the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA).
Commenting on the resolution from the Traditional Chiefs and Elders’ recent conference calling for the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court by the government, Minister Sirleaf stated that their recommendations are under study by the President.
He said that contained in the traditional leaders’ resolution, is that they want agricultural tools to cultivate available lands and are willing to pay taxes.
