The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has concluded its two-day high-level dialogue with the National Election Commission (NEC) and civil society organizations in Monrovia.
The dialogue held from October 24-25 2024, in Monrovia, highlighted the participants’ reflection on the electoral process and human rights issues across the nation where they proffered recommendations to solve the challenges faced by everyone during election.
Key among the recommendations made at the close of the dialogue included creating accessible environment for people with disability to participate, cooperation and coordination among youth, women and others to increase civic education and many others.
The session brought together key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice, law enforcement agencies, and the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights, alongside organizations like the National Union of Organizations for the Disabled and the National Commission on Disability.
The dialogue was aimed at evaluating the state of civic participation in the democratic process and to discuss ways to enhance transparency and inclusivity in future elections.
At the closing event, Commissioner Pela Boker Wilson, of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights, thanked the Office of the High Commission for its continuous support to Liberia’s protection of human rights which was evidenced by the role played in the two days engagement.
She said election is a process that contains three phases that has to do with before, during and after, which made the two-day gathering very important for the after-review stages.
According to her, as stakeholders at the high-level discussions they were able to review the outcome of the country’s last election and to find solutions through recommendations for the future.
The commissioner further suggested that more engagements of said nature should be held ahead of election so as to have goals met.
Commissioner Boakai Dukuly of the National Election Commission buttressed the INCHR’s commissioner by thanking the partners of the commission that organized the event.
He encouraged the stakeholders to take seriously the recommendations and act upon them in the future.
