The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has commended the President Joseph Boakai for the establishment of establishment of the Secretariat of the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court and the Appointment of the Executive Director, Jonathan Massaquio.
The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) is mandated by the TRC Act to ensure the implementation of the TRC’s recommendations.
The INCHR also has a critical task and mandate to ensure that all the recommendations contained in the TRC report are implemented. Section 46, of Article 10 of the Act creating the TRC specifically states that “The Independent National Human Rights Commission shall be seized with the responsibility to ensure that all the recommendations contained in the Report of the TRC are implemented and that civil society organizations as guarantors of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) shall be seized of the responsibility to monitor and campaign for the implementation of all recommendations contained in the report.”
The Commission avers that for once, Liberia has set the pace to ensure justice for the victim of the civil war.
The Commission also commends President Boakai for communicating the decision to establish the Court and request for technical and financial support from the UN.
With the experience of the United Nations in Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Rwanda and Cambodia, the Commission is confident that the process will go on unhindered and justice will be served.
The Commission is calling on all Liberians to get involve in the debate and discussion leading to the process of the establishment of the Court.
The Court, the Commission asserts will serve as a deterrence for future egregious crimes and help strengthen the justice system in the country.
