The Inspector General of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Gregory Coleman, has pledged to enhance security efforts and address persistent challenges in southeastern Liberia, including in counties such as River Gee, Grand Kru, and Maryland.
At the community engagement meeting in Pleebo City Hall on December 1, 2024, IG Coleman highlighted the importance of forging partnerships between law enforcement and local stakeholders.
He noted that complaints about security issues in the southeast have risen, requiring immediate attention.
“This engagement is part of our routine outreach to strengthen security networks and build trust with local communities,” Coleman said.
He explained that effective collaboration is critical to addressing crises and improving policing in underserved areas.
The meeting brought together various stakeholders, including leaders of the Motorcycle and Tricycle Union, Madam Chris Walker (District Inspector), Pleebo City Mayor Larry G. Geekor, and a representative from the Liberia Marketing Association.
The discussions centered on the role of community collaboration in maintaining order and fostering development.
Residents expressed concerns about the activities of companies such as CRC and MOPP, which some claim have contributed to local unrest.
IG Coleman promised to return to Maryland County to resolve these issues while cautioning that pressuring the companies to leave could result in severe economic consequences for the region.
“We have to provide effective policing that protects investments while ensuring community security,” Coleman remarked, emphasizing the need for balance in addressing corporate and community interests.
The Police Chief also revealed that President Joseph Boakai has assured his administration’s full support for the LNP, underscoring the government’s commitment to bolstering security across Liberia.
The Minister of Finance and Development Planning has pledged to address logistical and resource concerns raised by the police.
As the LNP seeks to strengthen its presence and responsiveness in southeastern Liberia, Coleman reiterated the importance of mutual trust and cooperation between citizens and law enforcement to ensure peace and stability in the region.
