Inspector General of Police Gregory Coleman conducted a two-day engagement with residents of Zolowee and Gbapa in Nimba County areas affected by the operations of Arcelor Mittal Liberia.
The dialogue, part of his nationwide community policing initiative, took place from August 7-8, 2024, aimed at addressing concerns and strengthening relations between the affected communities and the company.
During the visit, IG Coleman commended the residents for their adherence to the rule of law, particularly highlighting their cooperation in the arrest of an individual accused of murder without resorting to mob violence.
“I want to thank you for your commitment to justice and for assisting in the arrest of a suspect without engaging in violence,” Coleman said.
The interactive forum provided a platform for residents to voice their grievances. Key issues raised included delays in resettlement payments, crop destruction, unemployment, rising crime rates, and water pollution.
The Inspector General assured the residents that their concerns would be addressed, emphasizing his commitment to improving safety and community relations.
Arcelor Mittal Liberia’s CEO, Michiel Van Der Merwe, expressed gratitude to the residents and emphasized the importance of patience. “We are committed to maintaining a positive relationship with you,” Van Der Merwe said. “While we may not be able to employ everyone, we are working to improve conditions.”
IG Coleman announced plans to establish a Community Watch Forum (CWF) in the affected areas within the coming weeks.
“This community will be part of a pilot project aimed at combating organized crime and exposing wrongdoers,” Coleman stated.
He urged residents to remain patient and cooperative as efforts to address their issues continue.
The engagement concluded with a commitment from the citizens of Zolowee and Gbapa to adhere to the law while awaiting solutions to their grievances.
The Inspector General’s visit was widely praised by the local communities for its timely and proactive approach.
