I Will Do What The People Will Say –Pres. Weah Vows On War/ Economic Crimes Court

President George Weah has reiterated his unflinching vow to respecting the views and the inspiration of the citizenry on the implementation of the War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC) in Liberia.President George Weah recently wrote the Liberian Legislature seeking the advice of that august body on the way forward on the establishment of the court which is aimed at prosecuting Liberians who reportedly committed heinous crimes against humanity during the 14 years civil upheavals that led to the loss of over 250,000 lives.
The Economic Crime Court is also aimed at prosecuting past and current public officials that are accused of milking the country.
Making the disclosure on Tuesday during Executive Mansion regular press briefing, Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, Smith Toby said President Weah has received lots of petitions pursuing the court to be established to ensure justice for those that were harmed.
Toby said the President is motivated to seek the Legislatures’ advice because he has received lots of petitions calling for the establishment of War & Economic Crimes Court since his ascendency to the presidency – even in the midst of the economic constrain.
Naming few of those that have petitioned the Liberian leader, are Liberians under the banner; “Council of Patriots or COP” who among many things, called for the Court; Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), coupled with the nation’s chiefs and elders, as well as petition from recent the National Economic Dialogue (NED).
ACCORDING TO Toby, the President has accepted the views of everyone but considered the Legislature’s view as final because its represents the entire country.
“The Legislature is the direct representative of our people. We have written the Legislature and whatever decision taken by the legislature will be accepted,” the President vowed.
President George Weah has averred and maintained that he will do what the people of Liberia want him to do.
He has however called on politicians, CSOS, religious groupings and student communities to encourage their respective lawmakers on their pending decision of the establishment of the War and Economic Court here.
According to him, following the debate on the establishing of the court, the President, had thought seeking broad-based input referencing the recent communication seeking the Legislature’s advice on the court saga.
Toby said, as part of the President’s efforts in soliciting views, he spoke with Heads of the International Criminal Court (ICC) during a sidelined discussion on issues of the establishment of the War Crime Court.
