Members of the House of Representatives have unanimously agreed to amend their rules and proceedings to conform to present-day legislative standards.
Their action is enshrined in Article 38 of the Constitution which mandates both Houses of Senate and Representatives to make their own rules and procedures.
The House of Representatives recent decision follows the conclusion of a Three-Day Legislative Reform Forum on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at the Farmington Hotel.
The House in Partnership with the European Union, Sweden Sverige, Irish Aid, UNDP, and UN Women conducted the Legislative Reform Forum under the theme; ‘Responsive Lawmaking, Proactive Oversight, and People-Centered Representation.’
Speaker Fonati Koffa urged lawmakers to submit all proposed “rule changes” to the Judiciary Committee, chaired by Michael Thomas for review and compilation for subsequent scrutiny and adoption by plenary, the highest decision-making body of the House of Representatives.
“I want us to develop a way forward where all of you who have rules’ changes to write them down, submit them to Judiciary; Judiciary compiled them and resubmit them to the plenary. And then we will put a committee together to review and go through them and then we can bring it back for adoption,” Speaker Koffa said.
