Montserrado County Senator Darius Dillon has declared that the “honeymoon period” for President Joseph Boakai’s ‘Rescue Government’ is officially over beginning this year (2025) and beyond.
Dillon, who is also a supporter of the government warned, “2025 will be different because people cannot be acting at Central Bank and LTA for almost a year; this will end in January.”
However, the senator’s comments come at a time when the citizenry appeared to be unhappy with the Boakai’s administration after one year in power in the midst of suspected economic challenges, glaring social unrest, perceived corruption and governance issues, among others.
Also, the country has struggled with high unemployment rates, inflation, and a lack of basic services, with citizens struggling with the harsh realities of poverty, resulting in growing frustration with the government’s inability to address these pressing issues.
Addressing a news conference yesterday, January 13, 2025, Dillon, who was the President’s campaign chair for Montserrado County, emphasized his commitment to holding the administration accountable and vowed to take responsibility as a senator with renewed vigor.
He admitted, “The people of Liberia are tired of empty promises and inaction. They deserve better, and it is our duty as elected officials to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met.”
“So, we will not sit idly by while the needs of our people are ignored, and as an elected senator, I have a responsibility to my constituents and the nation. I will be vigilant in my oversight of the executive branch and will demand transparency in all government dealings,” he assured.
According to him, it is also unconstitutional for the President to allow people to act in tenure positions like the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) and Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) without any action, something he described as a violation of the act establishing these institutions.
Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, Dillon also made it clear that he intends to leverage his position to advocate for the needs of his constituents, and asserted, “This is my government, but I will not allow any wrongdoing to go unnoticed.”
“We will checkmate the executive branch in line with our oversight responsibilities, ensuring that the right things are done for the common good of our people because that was exactly what we promised them in 2023.
“We were soft and a little bit flexible with the President because it was the government’s year, and we needed to allow the administration to settle well. But this 2025, the expectations of the people are high, and we must work to live up to their expectations,” he assured.
Meanwhile, the senator has also called on his colleagues to collaborate with unity in the interest of the citizenry and added, “We must come together as a united front to demand change because as Senator, it is our constitutional responsibility.”
