Health Clears Fmr. Medical Director Off Oxygen Scandal

By B. Linus Flomo
Marion Subah, the former Medical Director of the Buchanan Government Hospital, has been cleared of all charges related to the alleged illegal sale of oxygen to dying patients, following a thorough investigation conducted by a team from Liberia’s Ministry of Health.
The investigation was prompted by a recall letter from the Ministry’s Human Resource Division, initiated after Lawrence Chea, Chief of Staff in the office of Representative Matthew Joe, raised concerns about Subah’s alleged involvement in selling oxygen to patients in critical condition for $30 every three hours.
However, the investigative team, which included representatives from various departments such as the Office of the General Counsel and the Liberia Medical Dental Association, found no evidence to support these allegations.
Former Minister of Health, Wilhemina Jallah, confirmed to the investigative team that the fee-for-service model, which included the provision of oxygen, was being piloted at the Liberian Government Hospital (LGH) and other medical facilities across the nation.
Consequently, the investigation concluded that Subah had not engaged in any illegal activities regarding the sale of oxygen.
The team recommended that she be cleared of all charges and be reassigned to a medical director position at another healthcare facility due to the tension in the county.
Furthermore, in light of concerns regarding the use of proceeds from the fee-for-service model, including revenue generated from oxygen sales, the Ministry of Health may consider auditing the financial records to ensure proper documentation and accountability.
The findings of the investigation have brought relief to Subah, who maintained her innocence throughout the ordeal.
With the cloud of suspicion lifted, Subah informed a team of journalists that she looks forward to continuing her medical career and serving the people of Liberia with dedication and integrity.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has assured the public of its commitment to upholding transparency and accountability within the healthcare system, ensuring that all patients receive the care and support they need without any compromise on quality or ethics.
