An astute alumnae of the Ricks Institute, Ambassador Madina Wesseh has encouraged the students of the school to choose a career that they want to do with passion and not for love of money in mind
She stressed that career is an occupation which is undertaken for a long period of time in a person’s life, saying every student must make such decision but she informed them that they can also change it in the future when deemed necessary.
Ambassador Wesseh who spoke as the keynote speaker at the Career Day program at her alma mater over weekend in Virginia, cautioned the enthusiastic students not to choose a career because of financial gains because money cannot purchase happiness not even to mention joy.
“A career is a calling so you must have the sense of fulfilment and the money will come later as you satisfactorily perform your duties,” she indicated.
The renowned Diplomat, Lawyer and Communication Specialist told the students that they should not harbor the notion that only government can provide employment in the country , pointing out that they can also venture in the private sector as sole proprietor or work in the Non-governmental Organization (NGO)’s Sector or even in a faith based schools like the Ricks Institute and others.
According to the keynote speaker, no profession is better than others stating, that some are prestigious as well as tedious and so they require huge work to acquire them. As such, she urged them to choose what she referred to as some of the traditional professions like Law, Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, amongst others.
She then applauded the administration of the school for the timely introduction of the career guiding program that she believes will undoubtedly serve as a compass to lead the students as they decide on a career path.
During an interactive educational engagement, the former Senior Executive of the Cabinet and Envoy on Special Assignment during former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s Administration, Ambassador Wesseh told the students that the internet is an essential element as it helps to open up their horizons.
She however advised them to not rely on some of the aps like the Artificial Intelligence (Ai ) when it comes to solving all their assignments because the disadvantage is that it makes them lazy therefore they should create their own intelligence to do their work.
The speaker encouraged the students to always be involved with extra curriculum activities adding that the choir, band , including sports are still active on the campus.
The Vice Principal for Instruction (VPI), William Kilby, informed the gathering that the program was the launch of the Moses Ricks Lecture Series adding that it will be a monthly event.
According to him, they will be inviting professional from diverse backgrounds who will be speaking to the students regarding making a decision on career path.
“Those professionals will be telling our students what inspired them to choose their career paths, their challenges as well as successes over the years,” VPI Kilby said.
The Vice Principal for Administration (VPA), Kpaka Kemah indicated that the lack of Guiding Counselors at schools is posing serious problems for students because some don’t even decide on what career to pursue after High School.
So this program is a step in the right direction for our students as they will have the opportunity to choose a career before graduation and he called on them to make good use of their time at the institute aimed at acquiring sound education,” he stated.
