Gwion’s Certification On Hold

A formal complaint of alleged election “irregularities” filed against Erol Madison Gwion by defeated candidate Jeremiah Garwo Sokan, has halted the representative-elect’s certification.
The National Elections Commission (NEC) upheld the certification of the Grand Gedeh County District 1 Representative-elect, Gwion because the matter has not been adjudicated since his election last month.
However, the winners from the Tuesday, November 16 by-election who were certified were independent candidate, Finda Gborie-Lansanah of Bomi County; James Kolleh of the People’s Unification Party of Bong County and independent candidate, Samuel Brown, of Nimba County.
During the by elections, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) candidate Sokan claimed that there were electoral irregularities but before the Commission’s hearing office, the accuser will have to prove his allegations.
Sokan was defeated with 3,109 votes to 2, 698 votes in favor of the Liberia Restoration Party (LRP) candidate, Erol Madison Gwion.
But there are reports that the ruling party has distanced itself from the allegations of electoral irregularities and is believed not to be taking side with Sokan against Gwion because both are partisans of the CDC only that one decided to take another political direction to get elected.
