Group Applauds Modad’s Appointment

A group identified as ‘Progressive Alliance for Good Governance (PAGG) has lauded the appointment of Amin Modad as Minister of Commerce and Industry.
A press release signed by the head of the group, Samuel Targbe, said that was no mistake to appoint Modad, a successful businessman who earlier served as Sr. Policy Advisor to the Government of Liberia on trade and investment as Minister of Commerce and Trade, observing that Modad played a key role in Liberia’s post-conflict recovery, especially with regards to establishing key economic policies and Liberia’s integration into the multilateral trading system.
“Our group is of the strongest conviction that Modad, with his qualifications and treasure of experience from both private and public sector, is better suited to head the Liberian commerce and trade to improve the sector,” the release noted.
“In this vein, we like to assure the Liberian people that with the appointment of Mr. Modad, a onetime Liberia’s Representative to the World Trade Organization, as head of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, will definitely meet your expectations for a better trade environment,” the release added.
Additionally, the group also expressed confidence in his ability to expand investment by strengthening the private sector, improving economic growth, and expand job creation, as well as protect local industries, considering that he is one of Liberia’s few trade development experts and postwar business success stories.
Having expressed disappointment in some businesses that reject the Liberian dollars and only accept transaction in the United States dollars, the group assured Liberians that Modad, when confirmed, will jump-start engagements with businesses operating in Liberia to carry on all commercial transactions in both Liberian and United Dollars as legal tender.
As the CEO of the MI Group which includes hospitality, real estate development, and food production, Modad is seen as the man who will definitely address the shortages of the most essential commodities (rice and petroleum) and other commodities to provide a lasting solution.
“Meanwhile, we are recommending to Minister-designate, Amin Modad, as part of World Trade Organization (WTO) plan, to embark on the establishment of a single window platform to handle trade transactions and reduce the time for documents to import and export,” the release concluded.
